From Dianna Shipman:

IN MEMORIAM - JOEL MACAFEE passed away Saturday, Aug. 31, due to a brain tumor. It was very sudden - he danced with us just over a week ago and seemed fine - having fun and making new friends. Joel had only been dancing with us a couple of months but had already become a regular.

Janell wrote to me saying, in part, "Dianna, you just don't know what your little dance group meant to Joel . . . He felt an immediate rapport with everyone. He said he'd finally found people like him and he was soooooo enjoying himself. Looking forward to the next Wednesday, as we were walking out from class. Thank You, Thank You for giving him the chance to belong to your special "clan". I will so miss dancing with my brother, I never had before."

The memorial service was Wednesday, September 4, 2002, at 6 pm; several of our dancers attended, including Allan Rogstad, Ed Young, Lisa Smith, Mitch Philpot and Susan, Ray, Jessica, Rachel and Thomas Kelm. The service was held at The First United Methodist Church in Needville. Allan Rogstad played bagpipes for the service. (About the playing of the bagpipes, his sister Janell wrote "I am speechless, because it is exactly what Joel would want.")

Joel, age 30, is survived by his son Collin Ian Chase Macafee, his mother Jewell Macafee, his brother William Macafee, his sisters Windy, Willa, Joli, Jewell, Joetta and Janell, his grandmother Viola Craker, his great aunt Jeanne Emerson and numerous nieces and nephews. The service included a United States Marine Corps Honor Guard (with military salute), Psalm 23, hymns Church in the Wildwood, Amazing Grace and Shout to the Lord, readings from Romans 8:31-39 and Luke 4:16-21, and the reading of the poem "My Heart's in the Highlands" by Janell Hamor.

A fund in Joel's memory is being set up; donations can be made to the Macfie Clan Society of America, 420 Ash Drive, Baxter, Tennessee 38544 http://www.macfiesocietyofamerica.com/ (tonight we took up a collection at dancing and will do so again for the next couple of weeks before I send it in. I will be preparing a webpage in the next few days with more about Joel - Dianna)
