Jerrel Ray Murray, FSA Scot (1930-2006)

Jerrel Ray Murray, 76, passed away on his birthday, Tuesday, February 14, 2006 in OKC. Jerrel was born Feb. 14, 1930 in Pauls Valley, OK. He is preceded in death by his parents and his son, Randall Jon Murray. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, JonEvah, son, Andrew, wife, Deidra, grandson, Sean, and brothers, Raymond and Bud Murray. He is also remembered and loved by many other members of his family and many friends.A former U.S. Marine, Jerrel retired from the U.S. Treasury Dept. in 1995 after 35 years of service. He met the love of his life while taking piano lessons in 1948 with JonEvah's mother, Evah. He earned the Order of the Arrow as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts. His hobbies included sewing (for which he earned a Golden Thimble Award in 1969), painting with oils, genealogical research, and design. Jerrel designed the Oklahoma Tartan, a district tartan, which was certified by the Scottish Tartans Society in March, 1998. Jerrel helped organize and led the Scottish Club of Central Oklahoma from 1982 through 1986, when he organized and led the United Scottish Clans of Oklahoma, Inc. Jerrel Ray Murray, Fellow in the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, was a frequent presenter of lectures and workshops on Scottish history and culture and Gaelic music and language. His most recent work in progress was to lead a group of volunteers to compile a collection of artifacts representing Scottish history, culture, music and language for the Oklahoma History Museum. Jerrel served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church. Services will be held at 2PM Saturday, Feb 18, at the Church of the Savior, 5600 NW 63rd Street, OKC. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to United Scottish Clans of Oklahoma, PO Box 50414, Midwest City, OK 73140-5414.
