Whitefield (1921-2008)
DONALD
D. WHITEFIELD passed away July 25, 2008. Born December 11, 1921 in Bellaire,
Ohio, he was the only son of William H. Whitefield and Charlotte Kochert
Whitefield. While attending school in Ohio and Michigan, he was active in debate
and band. He moved to Houston after WWII and in 1961 founded Whitefield Plastics
Corporation, custom manufacturer of polyurethane products. During the war, Capt.
Whitefield served as lead crew navigator on B-24's with the 492nd, 45th, and
445th bomb groups stationed in England. Awarded two Distinguished Flying
Crosses, an Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Croix de Guerre, he
was a survivor of one of the worst group losses of any one air raid over
Germany. He was also recalled for the Korean Conflict. Over the years, Don
worked as a Republican Party activist, volunteered in Boy Scouts as his son
worked from Cub to Eagle, served as president and drum major of the Houston
Highlander Bagpipe Band, acted as Chieftain of the Heather & Thistle Society,
and was a member of Spring Branch VFW Post #8790 and Second Air Division
Association. He is survived by Billie, his wife of 65 years, daughter, Patricia
Schwertner and husband Ron, and son, William H. Whitefield and wife Janeal.
Grandchildren Ryan (Rachael), Erin, and Adam Schwertner, Nickolas (Laura),
Patrice, Laura, Diana, and Dr. Jenks Currie (Erica). Great-Grandchildren Allison
and Samuel Schwertner, and Ann Katherine and Garner Currie. Honorary pallbearers
are the Past Chieftains of the Heather and Thistle Society and Houston
Highlanders Pipe Band.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2-5p.m. at Pat Foley
Funeral Home, 1200 W. 34th St. Houston. Services will be 10 a.m., Monday, July
28, at the same location, followed by burial at Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of
flowers, contributions may be made to St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 4300
North Shepherd, Houston, TX 77018 or a charity of your choice.
