VIRGIL LEE SMITH , 93, died December 30, 1999, in Houston, Texas. He was born December 25, 1906 in Cotulla, Texas, to Daniel and Maude Ella Robuck Smith . He graduated from Yoakum High School, attended Southwest Texas State College, San Marcos, and received a BBA degree from the University of Texas, Austin in 1929.

In high school he played all varsity sports. In college he was active in the YMCA and other organizations. In 1929 he began working as an Accountant with Superior Oil Company where he retired in 1971 after 42 1/2 years. He helped organize the Petroleum Accountants Society of Houston in 1952, held elective office in PASH and became a Life Honorary Member in 1971. He was a Master Mason, became a Knight Templar in 1970 and received the Masonic 60 year award in 1990. He was a life long Methodist and a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church since 1934, where he served as President of both the Friendship Class (1942) and Men's Fellowship Class (1991). He served in other capacities, such as Treasurer of Methodist Conference Room to Grow Committee, and became a Life Member of St. Paul's Administrative Board. He was a member of Houston Highland Games Association and became its treasurer. He was active in Boy Scouts of American from 1919 until his death in 1999. In 1955 he became a Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow, Colonneh Lodge. He received many awards, such as Silver Beaver (1958), National OA Distinguished Service Award, God and Service Recognition and OA Founders Award. He was Lodge Delegation Advisor to National OA Conferences for nineteen years. He was honored in a special ceremony in 1996 by the members of Colonneh Lodge, "%3BThis is Your Life, Virgil ."

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Virginia Sabra Whipple Smith , and by his parents and two brothers, Rufus and Daniel F., and a sister, Annie Maude. He is survived by children Virginia Lee Smith Hill and husband Dean, Daniel Lester Smith and wife Laura, and Virgil Raymond Smith and wife Cecilia; and by grandchildren Cal Hill, Howard Hill and wife Sherry, Elaine Hill and husband Matt Hauser, James Smith and wife Jacque, Rosemary Bunch and husband Mark, Heather Vacker, Leanne Smith , Rebecca Smith , Rachel Wikowsky and husband Pete, and Kevin Smith ; and by great-grandchildren Nathan and Nicholas Hill, Alyssa Hauser, Austin Smith , Courtney Vacker, Daniel and Hailey Bunch, and Kyle and Jacob Wikowsky.

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 4, 2000 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Settegast-Kopf, and funeral services will be at Settegast-Kopf Chapel at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, January 5, 2000, with Rev. Terry Jay Thompson officiating. Interment and graveside service will follow at San Marcos Cemetery, San Marcos, Texas at 3 :00 p.m. Pallbearers will be the 10 grandchildren, and honorary pallbearers will be members of Colonneh Lodge, OA. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul's United Methodist Church Foundation, 5501 South Main, Houston, Texas, 77004 or to Boy Scouts of America, Sam Houston Council, 1911 Bagby, Houston, Texas 77002.
