CORNELIUS James "JIM" STEWART II passed away Friday April 2, 2004. Born June 27, 1925, he was a third generation Houstonian. His parents, Ross Stewart and Catherine Rial Stewart, precede him in death. Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gretchen Braun (Gay) Stewart, his five children, C. Jim Stewart III and wife Marti, Richard Ross Stewart and wife Celia, David Rial Stewart, Gretchen Stewart Anderson and husband David, Catherine Stewart Carrigan and husband Stephen, his fourteen grandchildren, C. Jim Stewart IV, Robert Stewart, Christopher Stewart, Catherine Stewart, Lauren Stewart, Kristin Frank, Kara Trail, David Anderson, Ashley Anderson, Nicholas Anderson, Lauren Carrigan, Leslie Carrigan, Amy Carrigan, Megan Carrigan and three great-grandchildren, Grace Stewart, Davis Frank and Robert Trail. He is also survived by his sister Nancy Stewart Bates and brother in law Garth C. Bates. Jim graduated from Houston's Lamar High School and immediately enrolled in the Spartan School of Aviation, where he learned to fly. Shortly thereafter, he joined the U S Army Air Corp, where he became a flight instructor. Following his service in the Army, Jim attended the University of Texas at Austin where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. While at the University he met Gretchen Elizabeth (Gay) Braun. Jim and Gay were married in 1947 and made their home in Houston, Texas. In the same year Jim joined Stewart & Stevenson Services, Inc., a company founded by his grandfather in 1902. During his 54 year tenure with the company he played a major role in the company's growth from a Houston based blacksmith shop to a billion dollar world wide enterprise. He retired as Chairman of the Board of that company in June 2001. He was actively involved in community service and business activities. Jim served on the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross and the Houston Chamber of Commerce. He was also a Trustee for the Kelsey Seybold Foundation, President of the Rotary Club of Houston and President of the Rotary Club Foundation. He served many years on the Salvation Army Board of Directors and as an advisor to the Texas A & M University, serving on the Engineering Council Development Committee. He was on the Board of the National Association of Manufacturers and Merchants Bank of South Houston and served as Director and Advisory Director of Texas Commerce Bank of Houston. He also served as a Director of the Houston Country Club and the Houston Club. At his death he was Chairman of the Houston Grampian Association, a position he held since 1978 and on the Board of Directors of the University of Texas Medical Board (UTMB) in Galveston, having served since 1994. While deeply involved with community and business activities Jim's real priority was his family. He cherished the time he shared with his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He particularly loved spending time at his home in Galveston surrounded by members of his family. The family would like to thank Dr Ronald

Hospital for the wonderful care and attention they provided. Dick Anderson, Jack
Currie, Robert D. Dilworth, Thomas W. Ford, Earl L. Lester, Dr. Alfred E. Leiser,
Albert E. McGill and Robert M. Wiggins will act as pallbearers. Bruce E.
Barnett, William Harding, Harvey Hill, John Linscomb, Paul Koomey, Joe Manning
Jr. and Robert E. Zimmerman will be Honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be
6:00 until 8:00 pm Monday, April 5, 2004 at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010
Bering Drive. The Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at
St. Michael Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Rd, with Rev. Monsignor Jack M. Dinkins,
Celebrant. Following the funeral service there will be a private family Rite of
Committal graveside service. Memorial Gifts in honor of Jim may be sent to the
American Cancer Society or a favorite charity of choice. |
